New word every day
Five letters, six guesses. Green is right and in place, amber is right but somewhere else.
Loading today's word…
Green — Right letter, right place.
Amber — Right letter, wrong place — it is in the word somewhere else.
Grey — Not in the word. Or not again, if you have already been shown it.
That last one catches people out. If the word is STEAL and you guess SPEED, the first E comes back green and the second comes back grey — not because there is no E, but because there is only one and you have already been shown where it is.
All 8,636 five-letter words in the dictionary are accepted, not just the ones that could be today's answer. Being told a perfectly ordinary word “is not a word” is the most irritating thing a game like this can do.
The answers are drawn from a much smaller set: common words only, and no plurals — working out four letters and an S is not really solving anything.
Four greens and no idea what the fifth letter is — _IGHT is light, might, night, right, sight, tight, fight, eight — is the worst position in any game of this kind, because guessing costs a turn and there may be six candidates.
Our five-letter solver takes the colours you have and shows what is still possible. It works on this game and on every other game of the same shape — and it handles repeated letters properly, which most solvers do not.
Your streak, your record and today's board live in this browser and nowhere else. There is no account, nothing is sent to us, and we could not see your streak if we wanted to.
The cost of that is honest: clear your browser data, or play on a different device, and the streak starts again. That is the trade for a game that asks nothing of you.
