ABCcount started as a simple idea: writers need a fast, clean way to check word count, character limits, and reading time — without a cluttered page fighting for their attention. No account required, no dark patterns, nothing tracked that doesn't need to be.
As the tool grew, we added ABCcount Pro — optional, AI-assisted writing suggestions for people who want a second pair of eyes on grammar, clarity, and vocabulary. The free counter stays free forever; Pro is there for people who want more, not a paywall in disguise.
We've also branched out past counting: our word scrambler checks every possible word hidden in a jumble of letters against a real 57,000-word dictionary — built for word games, crosswords, and the occasional mental block, and free to use just like the core counter.
The free side of ABCcount now covers platform-specific counters for X/Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube — each tuned to that platform's real character limits and truncation points, not just a generic count. There's also a dedicated essay word-count tracker with goal presets for common assignment lengths.
ABCcount Pro has grown into a fuller writing toolkit: a summarizer with length and format control, a paraphraser with nine distinct tone modes, and a plagiarism & AI-detection scanner that checks your text against real indexed web sources. Pro subscribers get a dedicated dashboard linking directly to everything included in the plan. Our browser extensions are published and available now — a lightweight one for Free and Pro, and an inline one for ProMax that rewrites text right where you’re typing. Both are listed, clearly labeled, on thebrowser extension page.
The newest part is ABCcount Teams, and it came from noticing something the general tools get wrong. Every writing assistant is built to make prose better, and better nearly always means shorter, plainer and more confident. That is right for most writing. It is quietly wrong for a contract, a clinical note or an incident report — where a rewrite that tightens a hedge into a statement of fact has not improved the document, it has changed what it says.
So Teams has modes built around what they are not allowed to touch. Legal leaves a limitation-of-liability carve-out exactly where you put it. Medical preserves every dose, route and timeline, and will not turn a suspected diagnosis into a confirmed one. Energy exists because we are in Houston: it keeps every depth, pressure and API number as written, and it will not add a cause to an incident report that the author did not.
There is also a Windows desktop app now. It reads text you have selected in Word, PowerPoint, OneNote, Outlook and Scrivener — and in most Windows applications that expose their text to the system, which is a longer list than we could sensibly print. The rewrite happens where you already are rather than in a browser tab you have to paste into and back out of. Teams is a separate product on its own site, abccount-teams.com, and the free counter here is unaffected by any of it — as it always will be.
