Ten words. Sixty seconds. Every one of them is a word the obvious method gets wrong — so if you score ten, you know something most people don't.
How many syllables in each? Say the word out loud and count the beats \u2014 that is all a syllable is.
Fair warning: these are the words people get wrong.
Say a word and clap once for each beat. Dog is one clap. Table is two. Beautiful is three. That is the whole idea — there is nothing more technical underneath it.
It has nothing to do with how a word is spelled, which is exactly where people go wrong. Rhythm has no vowel you can see and two beats you can hear. Queue has four vowels in a row and one beat.
The trick that catches everybody: a word can lose a beat when you say it quickly. Choc-o-late written, choc-late spoken. Words like that are deliberately left out of this quiz — there is no fair answer.
Almost every syllable counter online, and most people asked to guess, use the same rule: count the groups of vowels in the spelling, then drop a silent e at the end. We checked it against 124,918 real pronunciations. It is wrong on one word in six.
po-em — two beats, because o and e are said separately
kwi-er, whatever the spelling suggests
sci-ence
rhy-thm — the second beat has no vowel in it at all
a-re-a
Which is why the syllable counter on our rhyme page looks each word up in a pronunciation dictionary rather than guessing from the letters.
Poets
A haiku is five beats, then seven, then five. A sonnet is ten a line. Get one word wrong and the line limps.
Songwriters
A lyric has to fit the bar. Two syllables where the tune has room for one is the difference between singable and not.
Teachers
Clapping out syllables is how children are taught to break words apart before they can read them.
Anyone learning English
Where the beats fall decides where the stress goes, and stress is most of what makes a word sound right.
Want to count a whole poem rather than guess at single words? The rhyme finder and syllable counter does lines, and checks three of them against 5-7-5 for you. For a different sort of word game, there is the daily blitz.
