Affect vs. Effect

These two words trip up even experienced writers, mostly because they sound alike but play different grammatical roles.

Affect

A verb meaning to influence or change something.

  • The weather can affect your mood.
  • Losing sleep affected her focus at work.
  • The new policy will affect everyone on the team.

Effect

A noun meaning the result or outcome of a change.

  • The effect of the storm was visible for weeks.
  • One effect of the new policy was faster approvals.
  • She noticed the effect immediately.

Quick way to remember

If you can replace it with "influence," you want "affect." If you can replace it with "result," you want "effect."
